Maine leads the nation in the amount of acreage having undergone voluntary third-party review and certification/verification of forest practices. Certification has become a popular vehicle for landowners to provide a wary and skeptical public with an independent verification of compliance with the principles of sustainable forestry.
Forest Certification is based on a simple premise: Forests can be protected while producing the wood and paper products our economy needs.Certification integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, water, and air quality.
Third party auditing is quickly becoming an expected practice for ownerships of significant size. A third party audit of management pursuant to well accepted and auditable standards provides evidence to the Maine legislature and to the public that management is sustainable and that public values relevant to private ownerships are being protected.
Orion provides services to help landowners prepare for certification, including gap analysis, on the ground monitoring, and administrative planning. We also help clients assess which certification standard is right for them: Sustainable Forestry Initiative or Forest Stewardship Council certification.
